A sense of nuanced romanticism permeates shirts and dresses emblazoned with the ‘London Calling’ print in shades of tomato soup red or cobalt blue, which takes style cues as well as its name from The Clash’s 1979 album cover. At a distance, the motif could be confused for homely Willow Patterns or toile de jouy, but not everything is as it seems – the buildings depicted are in fact city rooftops, industrial lots and factories, and rather than white the colours are set against a smoggy beige background.
