WHY WE LOVE THE Last Poets Oversized Jumper

The Last Poets - that legendary ensemble of spoken word artists, were born out of the black civil rights movement in the 1960's. With their revolutionary, powerful lyrics and spare rhythms, they are revered as the godfathers of Hip Hop. I was introduced to their album Right On! as a teenager and became besotted with their words and music. Some decades later I discovered through my friendship with the folks from poetry foundation Apples and Snakes, that they were coming to London to do a concert. I invited them round to my house for dinner - and they accepted! I have never worried more about a meal though luckily my then-husband was a very good cook but I still ordered a top class Indian takeaway in case. We spent an unforgettable evening together, my family, Abiodun Ayewole, Umar Bin Hassan, and Baba Tunde. I proposed the idea of making a jumper to celebrate their name, and this is it. Now I am honoured to consider myself a friend.
