Hideous Man (2003)
When I started my brand I decided to make a film instead of doing a fashion show. I knew nothing about making films, I only knew that it was a way to tell a story and my instinct gravitated towards it. In the 90's people seemed to do things without a huge plan - or any plan. I approached my friend, the late James Lebon who was the handsomest man in London and had a hairdressing salon on Greek Street called James Cuts. He was also a film maker and part of the fashion scene, alongside his brother Mark Lebon, the founder Crunch Studios which was a hive of creative collaboration and the initiator of the ground breaking simplicity and authenticity that defined the 90's. It was a very creative time, before the internet - things were much freer and looked amazing. I went on to make 9 short films over the last 20 years, three of them with John Malkovich directing and writing. Here is the last in the trilogy, Hideous Man. It seemed a good place to start this little series.

In 2002 I made a short fashion film with John Malkovich called 'Hideous Man' about some Beatnik girls waiting around in a club for their favourite poet to arrive and do a reading. I wanted the leader of the group to wear a jumper showing her devotion to literature and art, a bit like a band t-shirt. I was throwing out names like Camus, Godard, and Ginsberg with the stylist Cathy Kasterine. It was all getting a bit complicated. 'Did you ever see pictures of that t shirt people used to wear in the 70's with Clapton is God written on it?' said Cathy. This was the birth of the Ginsberg is God jumper, and led to me working in a completely different way with a focus on knits being a canvas for values and cultural alliances.
I hope you enjoy.
